Google soon to rank mobile friendly websites higher

Did you know that from April 2015, Google will start ranking mobile friendly (responsive) websites higher in searches on phones or tablets.

What does this mean?

Google search statistics show that 30% of all searches are done on mobile and growing year on year. From the 21st of April this year, searches from mobile devices will show websites that are mobile-friendly higher up the results than those which are not.

Will my website be affected?

It depends on two things:

How much traffic on your website is mobile?

If you have Google Analytics for your website you can view these stats from your Google Analytics login.

Is your website mobile-friendly?

Google has built a tool to test your website's mobile compatability.

Click here to test your website for mobile friendliness.

Simple input your domain name and it will run a mobile test for you.

What if your website is not mobile friendly?

Web technology has advanced from HTML4 to HTML5 over the past 2 years. The not so good news is that your website will need to be recoded / rebuilt on the newer technology to be responsive i.e. - mobile and tablet friendly.

In most cases we can keep the same design, in other words, your website will look the same as before, but be fully responsive.

In other cases, your website might need a slight make over or a fresh new design.

Is it critical to upgrade my website for only 30% mobile traffic?

If your website is not responsive, especially on mobile devices, you are losing potential business as people will naturally prefer to browse a mobile friendly website on their mobile phones than a non-mobile friendly website, i.e. - one that you need to zoom in and scroll around to read the text.
So, you could lose these potential people to another competitors responsive website.
